Project that grants the title of citizen of Santa Catarina to Bolsonaro is approved by the SC Legislature

A bill granting the title of citizen of Santa Catarina to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was approved, this Wednesday, 24th, by the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina (Alesc). Now, the project goes to the Final Draft for a vote before going for analysis by the State governor and Bolsonaro supporter, Jorginho Mello (PL).

The former president was born in Campinas, São Paulo, however, according to the project’s author, deputy Oscar Gutz (PL), Bolsonaro would have provided ‘relevant services’ to Santa Catarina. In his justification, Gutz also highlights that, during his political career, the former president defended the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility, the right to self-defense and the possession of a firearm for citizens without a criminal record. The text also details the amount that the Bolsonaro government would have allocated to the State during the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The title was granted by a majority of votes in the House. Only two deputies were against: Neodi Saretta and Father Pedro Baldissera, both from the PT. During the session, politicians who supported the project referred to Bolsonaro as ‘always president’. For Jair Miotto (União), the former president would have left a legacy for the people who ‘understood that they cannot be held hostage by ideologies’, as shown on the Assembly’s news portal.

On social media, Gutz and deputy Jessé Lopes (PL) posted a video talking about the vote. ‘Unfortunately, there were only two PT members who voted against, but the population of Santa Catarina knows the kindness that Bolsonaro showed during the pandemic for us Santa Catarina’. ‘Citizens of Santa Catarina go to those who deserve it, not to ungrateful PT members like the one we are going to revoke here the title of citizen of Santa Catarina’, said Lopes.

In March, Bolsonaro’s ’04’ son, Jair Renan, announced his pre-candidacy for councilor for Balneário Camboriú in this year’s elections. In the same month, Renan had joined the Liberal Party (PL). Born in Rio, he announced his pre-candidacy referring to people from Santa Catarina as ‘fellow southerners’.
