The epidemiological report released by the Santa Catarina State Department of Health (SES), through the Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (Dive), this Wednesday, the 24th, shows that probable cases of dengue (178,522) increased by 135 .15% in the year 2024 compared to the same period last year. In total, 274 municipalities registered probable cases of dengue and, in addition, 109 deaths have already been confirmed.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito outbreaks, also according to the latest report, are present in 243 municipalities, totaling 33,211 outbreaks. Of the 295 municipalities in Santa Catarina, 161 are considered infested by the vector.

In addition to dengue, Santa Catarina records an increase in the number of chikungunya cases. There are now 284 probable cases of the disease, of which 19 have been laboratory confirmed. The municipalities of residence of the confirmed cases were: Florianópolis (06), Joinville (03), Canoinhas (02), Garopaba (01), Guaramirim (01), Itajaí (01), Meleiro (01), Pomerode (01), Rio do Sul (01), São João Batista (01), and Trombudo Central (01). In comparison with the same period in 2023 when 171 probable cases were reported, an increase of 66% was observed.

SES reinforces that the best prevention measure against diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti continues to be the elimination of places with stagnant water. “Everyone needs to do their part, with simple actions, correct garbage disposal, closed water tanks, clean slabs, and other activities to prevent these places from serving as breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito”, he explains. João Augusto Brancher Fuck, director of Dive.

– Prevent rainwater from depositing and accumulating in containers such as tires, bottle caps, cans and glasses;
– Do not accumulate unnecessary and unused disposable materials in vacant lots and courtyards;
– Properly treat the pool with chlorine. If it is not in use, empty it completely without leaving puddles of water;
– Keep lakes and tanks clean or raise fish that feed on larvae;
– Wash your pets’ food and water bowls with a brush and soap at least once a week;
– Put sand in the plant dishes and remove the water accumulated in plant leaves twice a week;
– Keep trash bins covered, do not accumulate trash/debris and store tires in a dry, covered place.
