Excluding fuels, the group’s consolidated sales totaled R$27 billion in the quarter ended in March, an increase of 2.5%.

The company said that sales in the retail segment, including gasoline, fell 10.7% year on year, to R$6.9 billion, in a movement attributed to a 24% reduction in the sales area, with conversions and closure of retail stores in the last 12 months.

Excluding fuels, gross retail sales totaled R$6.05 billion (-12.1% year on year).

The cash and carry division, represented by the Atacadão banner, had gross revenue of R$ 19.3 billion, 6.6% above that recorded a year earlier, driven by the growth in same-store sales and the expansion of Atacadão, with 20 new stores in this modality in the previous 12 months.

According to the Carrefour Brasil report, the group’s sales in the quarter reflected an improvement in volume dynamics, especially B2B (for companies), which saw a recovery in volume “in the face of a more normal inflationary environment”.

In the first quarter, the company opened 5 new Atacadão stores — 4 stores converted from Carrefour hypermarkets and 1 store converted from Bompreço supermarket. Carrefour Brasil plans to open 10 to 12 new Atacadão stores this year.

E-commerce sales, which include shipping revenue but exclude marketplace commissions, increased 52% to R$2.4 billion in the quarter, driven by strong growth in food sales from own stock.

Carrefour Brasil added that revenue from digital channels represented 5.9% of Atacadão’s sales in the period, up from 2.7% in the same period last year.
