The Brazilian Aquatic Rescue Society (SOBRASA) released, this Wednesday (24), an epodemiological bulletin highlighting cases of drowning in Brazil. Divided by States, the document points out that Alagoas is in 3rd place with the fewest deaths due to drowning among all federations in the Northeast.

According to the bulletin, which takes into account drowning data from 2022 until this year, Alagoas recorded 111 deaths from drowning, with 51% of cities in Alagoas recording deaths from the accident. The bulletin takes into account drowning on beaches, lakes, rivers and swimming pools.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Pantaleão, Commander of the Water Rescue Battalion of the Alagoas Military Fire Department (CBM/AL), deaths from drowning are not accidents and can be avoided through prevention. In the State, from January to April this year, the corporation has already responded to 64 drowning incidents.

Alagoas only has more registered deaths than Rio Grande do Norte (RN), which had 95 deaths, and Sergipe (SE), which had the lowest number of deaths due to drowning in the entire Northeast, with just 72 deaths. The northeastern state with the highest record of deaths was Bahia, with 539.

Furthermore, Bahia was the second state with the highest number of drowning deaths, second only to São Paulo, which recorded 721 cases since 2022.

The bulletin pointed out that, in total in Brazil, there were a total of 5,488 deaths of Brazilians due to drowning in the period from 2022 to today. The report highlights that, with these data, there is an average of 15 deaths per day or one every 90 minutes.
