TJPE president Ricardo Paes Barreto had announced the “walk of fame” on the program “João Alberto na Jornal”, shown on Saturday (20) on TV Jornal and recorded in early April. According to him, the project was an initiative to make the Judiciary “more beautiful” and “attractive” and was already underway.

“The Judiciary’s walk of fame is already being implemented, which we only saw in Hollywood, at Maracanã. […] We are going to make the hands – which is our working instrument – of all the presidents who are still alive, today there are 17. And, as the presidents leave, they will make the mold of the hand, with the molded signature, the name and year”, said Paes Barreto, in the aforementioned interview.

Given the controversy caused on social media, g1 tried to listen, on Tuesday (23), to judge Ricardo Paes Barreto and the TJPE, but the president refused to grant an interview and the Court said it would not comment, not even through a note.

However, this Wednesday (24), less than 24 hours later, the TJPE press office contacted g1 and forwarded an official note signed by the institution’s general director, Marcel Lima, and a statement from the judge, in writing, denying the construction of the Walk of Fame.

“There was and is no project being processed, within the administrative scope of the Judiciary of Pernambuco, an official project to place pieces or tributes of any nature on the sidewalks surrounding the Court’s properties”, stated the general director of the TJPE in the note.

The statement sent on behalf of Ricardo Paes Barreto also denies the construction of the sidewalk, but contradicts what was reported in the interview. While, in the program, the judge said that the sidewalk was “under implementation”, in the statement he classified the work as a “suggestion” and a “removed idea”..

“In view of the repercussions regarding my interview with João Alberto, I clarify that the speech was a suggestion I received at the beginning of my management, like so many others, and I found it interesting. The report was recorded many days ago, and The idea was put aside a long time ago, as we already have our gallery of former presidents. Acting with transparency and good faith are always part of my role as a person and manager”, says the statement attributed to Ricardo Paes Barreto.

A survey by the National Council of Justice (CNJ), released in 2023, shows that:

  • TJPE has the second worst productivity index in the country57%, ahead of only the Court of Justice of Acre, with 53%;
  • Among courts considered medium-sized, such as Pernambuco, the state had the worst performance. The courts of Goiás, Santa Catarina, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso, Ceará, Maranhão, Espírito Santo and Pará are considered medium-sized;
  • According to the CNJ, the Comparative Productivity Index (IPC-Jus) is a measure that seeks to translate, into a single score, the productivity and efficiency of each court;
  • This index allows comparisons “regardless of size, as it considers what was produced from available resources or inputs”, including administrative activities.
  • A year ago, TJPE judges increased their own salaries and the salaries of judges. With this, magistrates will earn up to R$41,800, in a staggered adjustment until 2025;
  • In addition, they created, with the approval of state deputies, new benefits, such as three-month bonus leave every five years and the provision of various compensation amounts;
  • In 2019, TJPE judges also increased their own food allowance by 46.23%;
  • In the same year, 428 magistrates received compensation of up to R$1.2 million for untaken vacations. The state government needed to transfer R$60 million to pay this amount, defined as “improper and inadequate” by the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB).
