In an expanding market, the five largest wholesale stores in Minas Gerais earned almost R$25 billion last year. The Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras) collected the values ​​and revealed, this month, which are the largest chains in the State. Together, they total 317 units spread across the municipalities of Minas Gerais.

At the top of the ranking of cash and carry stores in Minas Gerais, and in seventh place in the list of supermarkets in general in the country, is MartMinas, including its Dom Atacadista banner. With 81 stores, the chain earned R$9.43 billion in 2023. Still, it lags behind the Supermercados BH, a retailer that earned almost R$17.4 billion in 2023 and is the only chain from Minas Gerais in the top 5 nationally.

Check out the list of the biggest wholesale stores in Minas:

  1. MartMinas Wholesale and Retail and Dom Atacadista: R$9.43 billion and 81 stores;
  2. ABC: R$4.48 billion and 72 stores;
  3. Mining Support: R$4.14 billion and 57 stores;
  4. Bahamas Group: R$4.01 billion and 77 stores;
  5. Villefort Wholesaler: R$2.9 billion, and 30 stores.

In 2023, the cash and carry sector opened 25 units in the State. The president of the Associação Mineira de Supermercados (Amis) reaffirms that the sector is growing, but makes a point, in a statement from the entity: “it is important to clarify that cash and carry continues to expand strongly, but here is an explanation: many units in this segment were opened through the expansion and transformation of neighborhood stores and hypermarkets converted to the new service model, but they do not mean the creation of a new point of sale”.

The biggest wholesale store in Brazil

Nationally, the largest wholesale store is Atacadão. The chain has 361 stores in the country and a turnover of R$79.11 billion. Behind it is Assaí, with 288 stores and revenue of R$72.80 billion. Together, the 23 cash-and-carry chains reached R$300 billion last year, distributed among 2,041 stores in Brazil, which employ 369,412 people directly.
