This Wednesday (04/24) marks the first working day of the new vehicle circulation rules on Avenida Brasil, announced by Rio de Janeiro City Hall on 04/11.
From now on, passenger cars and motorcycles will be able to use the selective lane of the road at pre-determined times on weekdays and freely on weekends and holidays.
Avenida Brasil is made up of six lanes in each direction, four in the center and two on the right. Of these four stations, one is intended exclusively for BRT circulation (furthest to the left); another used selectively by buses and taxis (next to the exclusive one); and the remaining two released for any type of vehicle.
With the changes, cars and motorcycles are authorized to use the selective lane on weekdays at two times: from 10am to 4pm and the 8pm to 5am. On weekends and holidays, traffic is open all day.
The maximum speed stipulated in the selective lane is 60km/h, requiring a reduction to 40km/h when approaching BRT stations.
It is worth mentioning that these changes were imposed by Rio City Hall after a series of complaints from drivers regarding the intense and constant congestion following the inauguration of the BRT Transbrasil.
On the morning of April 3, for example, the capital of Rio de Janeiro had more than 180km of total traffic jams, considering the city’s main roads.
What doesn’t change
The exclusive lane on Avenida Brasil, as the name suggests, remains restricted to the BRT system. Passenger cars, taxis, motorbikes or regular buses that fail to comply with this determination may be fined.
Trucks, of any size, can only use the common lanes of the road and are not authorized to circulate through the selective route.
