Campo Grande is facing outbreaks of respiratory and intestinal viruses, according to the municipal health department (Sesau). The number of visits to public health centers in the capital increased by 46% among adults and 28% in the pediatric ward, compared to patients on April 21st and 22nd of this year.

Given the increase in the number of people seeking medical care at Basic Health Units (UBS) and Emergency Care Units (UPA), Sesau warns of an outbreak and reinforces guidelines regarding care and ways to prevent diseases.

According to the municipal secretary of Health, Rosana Leite de Melo, at this time it is necessary to reinforce personal hygiene and respiratory etiquette, associated with vaccination against Flu and Covid-19. The secretary also warns about the use of a mask for symptomatic patients.

“The use of facial protection masks continues to be recommended for people with respiratory symptoms, individuals with risk factors, especially immunosuppressed people, the elderly, pregnant women and people with multiple comorbidities”, he adds.

According to the secretariat, the increase in cases of respiratory diseases has caused an overload on the municipality’s health service.

In Urgency and Emergency there were significant increases in demand, according to Rosana Leite. This Monday alone (22), 6,455 visits were recorded in the six Emergency Care Units (UPAs) and four Regional Health Centers (CRSs).

In relation to the previous day, there were 854 adult patients treated, while on April 22nd there were 1,593. In relation to child care, there were 638 on April 21st and 658 on the 22nd.

Regarding the situation, Sesau reported that it reinforced the functional staff of the units, reorganized the flow of care, in addition to efforts to increase the number of hospital beds.

In a note, Sesau determined some recommendations for the population. See the guidelines below:

  • Intensify your daily hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol gel;
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth without washing your hands;
  • Whenever you cough or sneeze, protect your mouth and nose with a tissue or use your forearm (inner bend of the elbow). Hands are important vehicles of contamination;
  • Do not share personal objects, such as glasses, cutlery, bottles, towels;
  • Keep environments well ventilated and avoid crowds;
  • The use of masks is recommended for people with flu-like symptoms;
  • Children with flu-like symptoms, such as cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, fever, headache and sore throat, should rest, consume a balanced diet, increase fluid intake and avoid contact with peers;
  • Do not take your child to school when they are sick, in order to avoid transmission;
  • Keep your vaccination record up to date.
