BAHIA LEADS REPORT ON CONFLICTS IN THE FIELD

Bahia is the Brazilian state with the most incidents related to rural conflicts in Brazil, according to the 2023 Conflicts in the Rural report, organized by the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT). The edition numbers were published by the entity on Monday (22).

The state of Bahia registered 249 cases, while Pará, with 227, and Maranhão, with 206, led the ranking of violence in the countryside. However, the northern region had the worst number, with 810 occurrences.

The causes of this rural violence were farmers, with 557 incidents, military or government forces, with 440, and businesspeople, in 361 cases. While the targets of virulence were traditional peoples and communities, with 1,394 victims, landless people, with 388 cases, and rural workers, targets of violence in 254 episodes.

The 2023 report is the highest annual rate recorded in the country, with 2,203 incidents related to conflicts in the countryside. The clashes are associated with land ownership, labor issues and access to water resources.

According to the CPT, in 2023, 950,847 people were directly affected by clashes in the countryside. The area involved in the conflicts exceeds 59 million hectares.
