Faep (Agriculture Federation of the State of Paraná) sent a letter this Tuesday (2) to governor Ratinho Junior and the state secretary of Agriculture, Norberto Ortigara, asking for the adoption of urgent measures to support dairy farming in the State.

The measures requested are the suspension of dairy imports from Mercosur, renegotiation of debts due and due soon, inclusion of milk permanently in government social programs, expansion of inspection and the guarantee that the benefits granted to processing companies are passed on to producers, and not just to industries.

Signed by President Ágide Meneguette, the document reinforces that dairy farming is present in the 399 municipalities of Paraná and that it has a crucial social and economic function for society. Currently, the State produces 4 billion liters per year, on 57 thousand properties.

“We are the second largest milk producer in Brazil and the sector has been suffering, for more than a year, with the increase in dairy imports, which reached record volumes. We need immediate measures to stop the current situation. We will fight to defend the our thousands of milk producers, who are suffering from this situation”, highlights Faep.

The entity considers that the productive sector has systematically dedicated itself to becoming increasingly competitive, but that its future depends on the hand of the State. “We need effective measures or, inevitably, we will increasingly see the abandonment of the activity by livestock farmers, decimation of herds, producer bankruptcy, absence of the product on the market and an increase in its price to the final consumer, leaving the country at the mercy of the international market”, emphasized Meneguette.
