In March, nine tons and 300 kg of fish, hunters’ weapons, 15 boats, eight tails, eight cubic meters of wood and fishing materials were seized during ‘Operation Banzeiro’, in the municipalities of Tefé, Maraã and Fonte Boa, inland from the Amazon. The operation began on March 11th.
The action was carried out by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), as well as the support of the Military Police and the management of the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS).
Last Sunday (31), the action also seized 100 kg of pirarucu, which is prohibited from fishing. The seizures occurred within the Auati-Paraná river, located in RDS Mamirauá.
During the 21 days of operation, according to the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), 23 fines worth R$285 thousand were issued.
Wild animals were also seized, including a capybara, four monkeys, 1 hawk and a porcupine. In the region, in addition to prohibited fishing, hunters hunt wild animals.
In addition to the inspection action, lectures were given on the management of the pirarucu and on the Amazon Chelonian Program (PQA) for communities located in the reserve.
The lectures aim to encourage the participation of more riverside communities in these sustainable activities.
