State of Maranhão and the Municipality of São Luís face a judicial sentence due to pending issues in psychosocial services.

MARANHÃO, April 1, 2024 – The State of Maranhão and the Municipality of São Luís face a judicial conviction for failing to fulfill their obligations in the implementation and enablement of the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS) in the São Luís Health Region.

This decision results from violations of the laws that govern the provision of mental health services, harming users of the Unified Health System (SUS).

Both the State and the Municipality alleged various reasons, such as lack of budgetary resources, but judge Douglas de Melo Martins rejected such arguments, stating that the resources for RAPS were guaranteed by the Ministry of Health.

The process originated from a Civil Inquiry that investigated the deaccreditation of psychiatric care clinics by the SUS.
