This afternoon, 04/01/2024, the Department of Highways (DER) intensified inspection of the right-of-way on state highways, with the aim of ensuring the safety of drivers and pedestrians. The right-of-way is a public area used for the construction of highways, lanes, shoulders, signs and side safety lanes, and its correct use is essential to avoid accidents.

According to Lúcia Guedes, DER Engineering assistant, the right-of-way is not just limited to the highway lane, it also covers adjacent and safety areas. The department is responsible for taking care of both the track and its surroundings, following specific rules to guarantee order and road safety.

In addition to carrying out maintenance and signage on state highways, DER has been combating irregular use of the right-of-way, removing signs, billboards and other elements that could impair drivers’ visibility. Since February, there has been an intensification in the removal of visual communications without authorization or with canceled authorization, which are usually installed in inappropriate locations, such as medians and curves.

According to Carlos Florêncio, planning director at DER, the removed visual communications are generally in locations that can divert drivers’ attention, posing a risk to road safety. The action aims to ensure the fluidity of traffic and the protection of everyone who uses state highways.

Therefore, it is essential that the right-of-way is used correctly, respecting the security standards established by the DER. Raising awareness among drivers and pedestrians is essential to promote safer and more fluid traffic on our highways.
