Firefighters rescue stranded residents in rural area of ​​RN

More than 200 people were rescued by the Rio Grande do Norte Fire Department after being stranded in different cities in the state since last Saturday (30), according to the corporation’s general commander, Colonel Luiz Monteiro Júnior, this Monday morning.

Teams were deployed early in the morning to rescue 33 people who were stranded in rural areas of New Corrals. Another four had been taken from the region on Sunday night (31).

Another 11 – including three children – were in a similar situation on a farm. Holy Cross and were rescued with the help of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) helicopter, sent to the state. According to the government, the two helicopters of the RN Public Security Secretariat are undergoing maintenance.

According to Colonel Monteiro, these two groups were in controlled environments, without major risks, however needed to be removed from their homes because they were unable to access food supplies and other basic services.

BR-304 is completely closed in Lajes after river overflows

Teenagers and children who were also stranded were rescued on Sunday night in the Rio Salgado, in Lajes. In this case, according to the commanderpeople were at imminent risk.

“All the people were rescued by the Fire Department and by civilians who helped, who were needed for this assistance. It was a situation of imminent risk, there was a risk that at any moment the water would hit them, or they would fall from the rock where were and being swept away by the strong current,” he said.

According to the government of Rio Grande do Norte, the State Civil Defense at least 20 incidents were recorded in the state over the weekend and at least 30 cities reported damage to neighboring roads, resulting in the temporary suspension of the water truck operation carried out by the Army. The Water Resources Secretariat monitors the state’s water reservoirs.

See recorded occurrences:

  • Ipanguaçu: Pataxó Reservoir spilling water with a 35 cm depth. State Civil Defense, Semarh and Igarn monitor the region. The bleeding from the reservoir left some families isolated, in need of access to supplies.
  • São Rafael: Part of a residence collapsed, but there were no casualties;
  • Florânia: Two people went to cross the Açude Novo sangria on a motorcycle and were carried away by the current, one victim died, and another was injured;
  • Baraúna: flooding points mapped by Civil Defense;
  • Bento Fernandes: Bleeding from the Espinheiro River caused flooding in some plantations with little damage to subsistence agriculture;
  • Santa Cruz: Record of seven adults and four isolated children; rescue already carried out by the Military Fire Department;
  • Currais Novos: Bleeding of the Dourado dam and rise of the São Bento river. Population at risk of flooding, under monitoring by the RN Civil Defense and Fire Department;
  • Tibau do Sul: Mass Movement on the cliffs and flooding points on roads, on Pipa beach;
  • Macaíba: Flooding points already mapped by the Municipal Civil Defense, without damage or losses;
  • Extremoz: Points of occasional flooding already mapped by the Municipal Civil Defense; problems in two catchment ponds with teams already carrying out maintenance; without damage and losses;
  • Apodi: Houses were flooded and, for safety, people had to be evacuated and taken to the homes of friends and relatives;
  • Caicó: Collapse of a storm drain that passes beneath a residence; property without residents was closed until services were carried out;
  • Mossoró: Flooding points in areas already mapped by the Municipal Civil Defense, and flooding of residences in the Quixaba settlement;
  • Natal: Opening of a crater in the Potengi neighborhood, occasional flooding on Avenida 4, in Alecrim, and monitoring of points mapped by the Municipal Civil Defense;
  • João Câmara: Flooding point in front of Caixa Econômica Federal without damage or losses.
  • São Rafael: Structural collapse of a residence.
  • BR-304: Section in Lajes and Mossoró with severe flooding; stretch of Lajes as a result of a dam collapse and the flood of the river that passes under the bridge. Signposted and off-limits highway;
  • Upanema: Some flooding points in the city and the Umari dam (third largest water source in the State) are on the verge of bleeding;
  • Riachuelo: Two dams broke and, probably, may have contributed to the rise in the level of the Salgado river, in Lajes;

The two highways remain closed in both directions with no plans for reopening. According to the PRF, the case of BR-304 occurred after the collapse of dams between Lajes and Caiçara do Rio do Vento, which caused the Ponta de Serra River to flood.

Due to the closure of BR-304, intercity bus lines that pass through the stretch were suspended: Mossoró, Angicos, Santana do Matos, Paraú, Areia Branca, Assu, Apodi and Messias Targino. There is no expected return date.

The RN Water and Sewage Company also suspended water supply to at least 10 municipalities in the region.

“Angicos, Fernando Pedroza, Pedro Avelino, Lajes, Pedra Preta, Caiçara do Rio do Vento, Jardim de Angicos, Riachuelo, Cachoeira do Sapo and the rural area of ​​Santana do Matos must have their supply suspended. The deadline for the system’s return will be informed later, as it depends on weather and work conditions encountered by the team in the field”, informed the company.

  • West Region to Natal:
    – BR-304, accesses RN-233 until reaching BR-226, in Triunfo Potiguar, remaining on BR-226 until Natal.
    – BR-110, passing through Upanema and Campo Grande to access BR-226, arriving at Triunfo Potiguar and continues via Jucurutu, Currais Novos until Natal.
  • Assu/Vale do Assu-Natal:
    – Access via RN-233 to access BR-226, until Triunfo Potiguar and follow the federal highway to Natal.

According to the Agricultural Research Company of Rio Grande do Norte (Emparn), between 7am on Sunday (31st) and the same time this Monday (1st), rains were recorded throughout the state, mainly in the interior, in the West, Central and Agreste.

The highest volume of water was recorded in Luís Gomes, in the Alto Oeste, where it rained 99.8 millimeters in 24 hours. In Severiano Melo, it was 80.8 millimeters. See the highest volumes for each region below:
