Brasilia drivers who accumulate outstanding fines had good news this Monday (1st). The Federal Supreme Court (STF) responded to a request from Governor Ibaneis Rocha and maintained the payment of traffic fines in installments until April 4, 2023.

In March 2023, the Court had declared the unconstitutionality of District Law No. 5,551/2015, which allowed payment of fines in installments.

With the approval of the Law by the STF, it is permitted to pay traffic fines by credit card in up to 12 installments.

In a virtual session that ended on March 15, 2024, the ministers decided, unanimously, to grant the motion for declaration presented by Governor Ibaneis and confirm the installments of the assessments signed.

At the time of the trial, the rapporteur was the now retired minister Ricardo Lewandowski, who stated that “there is STF jurisprudence to the effect that state rules that allow for the payment of traffic fines in installments are unconstitutional, as they usurp the Union’s exclusive competence to legislate on traffic. and transportation.”
