The state of Acre registered 22 fires until March 31 this year, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). This number is 144% higher than that recorded in 2023 in the same period, but 66% lower than that recorded in 2022 – 27 hot spots.

From January 1st to March 31st, 2024, Brazil recorded 14,571 fires, which were captured by satellites and indicate that geographic points captured by sensors have a temperature above 47°C and a minimum area of 900 m², according to Inpe, which makes the data available on the Programa Queimadas platform.

In a report on the Metrópoles website, the director of Science at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (Ipam), Ane Alencar, explains that Inpe’s fire data is important for government decision-making, despite not recording the size of the area affected. .

“This has fundamental value in helping with action, helping to know if a fire is occurring and where it is going. These are fundamental factors to help in the fight”, he highlights.

The states with the highest number of outbreaks in 2024 are: Roraima, with 4,090 occurrences – 310% more than in 2023; and Mato Grosso, with 3,334 outbreaks – 150% above the same period last year.
