The tradition of donating Easter eggs, centuries ago, mostly with chicken eggs, opened the eyes of French confectioners to an opportunity to make the holiday tastier from the 12th century onwards, when confectionery masters began emptying eggs from birds and fill them with chocolate.

The practice continued, but with cocoa – the base element of chocolate – being considered a luxury item, few people had access to chocolate eggs. Even with the seed never disseminated in the 21st century, it is still possible to find irrational prices in supermarkets and industry tricks to deceive consumers.

A survey carried out at a supermarket chain in Rio Branco this week found chocolate eggs with varying prices. But it draws attention, the tactic of some brands to convince consumers to buy the product not because of the chocolate, nor because of the symbol of the egg, which represents the rebirth of Christ, but because of the accessories, which are sold as a “gift”, which, in In fact, they become the main item of sale.

The Arcor brand, for example, sells a 100g egg with a headset for R$38.99, while an 80g bar of the same chocolate costs R$4.99 in American stores. In other words, Arcor egg chocolate would only represent around 13% of the sales value. Another package from Arcor, with the same chocolate and weight, but with a carrying case instead of the headset, is even more expensive: R$69.99.

Mariane Oliveira was in a supermarket looking for an Easter egg packaged with a specific accessory. “I’m more after the toy, because it’s for my 4-year-old son. The brand’s advertising influences a lot, he wants one that comes with a Hot Wheels car. For me, I would opt for gourmet eggs, stores that make a more filling product, with fewer industrial processes and more affordable prices, because in supermarkets the prices are overpriced,” she said. In the end, Mariane ended up taking the 166g egg for R$88.00. With this amount, if it weren’t for the advertising surrounding the egg + toy combo, the mother would be able to buy a Hot Wheels car (R$ 17.00) + 720g of the same chocolate bar.

The average cost of an 80g bar of Lacta chocolates on the same shelf is just R$8.00. It is important to remember that the chocolates that make up the eggs and the bars are exactly the same, in the cases mentioned above.

After all, what is the cheapest and most fun solution for chocolate at Easter?

In addition to the values of ready-made eggs, the ac24horas followed the advice of mothers heard in the report and looked for the values of the only two ingredients needed to make a chocolate egg at home in the simplest way possible; chocolate bar for confectionery, and egg shape.
