With more than 23 thousand marriages held in the State in 2022, the city that recorded the most unions was Serra, considering absolute numbers. The municipality had a 23% increase in the number of marriages in the comparison between 2022 and 2013.

On the other hand, of the more than 7 thousand divorces registered in 2022, Serra, followed by Cariacica, were the cities with the most broken unions.

The data on cities in which the most marriages and divorces took place in 2022 are part of the Civil Registration Statistics, released yesterday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

If the nuptiality rate is considered (marriages per group of 1 thousand inhabitants over 15 years old), the most “matchmaking” cities are Bom Jesus do Norte (13.24), Itapemirim (12.58) and Água Doce do Norte ( 11.48).

The cities with the highest divorce rate (proportional to the population over 15 years old) are Irupi (2.4), Mantenópolis (2.05) and Alto Rio Novo (2.01).

The number of marriages registered in 2022 in Espírito Santo – 23,209 – represented an increase of 0.4% compared to 2021.

According to psychologist Alexandre Vieira Brito, one of the reasons that may have led to an increase in the number of weddings in 2022 was the coronavirus pandemic.

“The pandemic did not allow for so many exchanges and there were restrictions, including for wedding ceremonies. Now, people are able to formalize their romantic arrangements, implementing this in the form of marriage.”

On the other hand, Alexandre observes the increase in the number of divorces. “But divorces did not necessarily happen because of the number of marriages, but because of the greater freedom that people are having to end relationships that are getting sick.”

The lawyer and director of Notary Public of the Union of Notaries and Registrars of Espírito Santo (Sinoreg-ES), Carolina Romano Brocco, highlights that since 2007 it has become possible to carry out a divorce extrajudicially, directly at a notary’s office.

“There was a simplification of procedures. Before, for a person to get a divorce, they had to go through a very long process, which was expensive. Today this process is easier.”

Carolina remembers that, since 2020, the divorce process at a registry office can also be done completely electronically.

Relationships end faster

“Till death do them part.” This phrase, so common in weddings, is no longer valid today. If before marriages lasted until one of the spouses died, today, couples are separating earlier and earlier.

Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) indicate that, in 2022, the average time between the date of marriage of spouses of different sex and the date of the divorce sentence or deed was 13.4 years. The average age of men at divorce was 44.2 years while that of women was 41.1 years.

According to psychologist and family therapist Naira Caroline Araujo, nowadays people are looking for more happiness and contentment, and when marriage becomes a source of sadness and frustration, the reasons that justified it in the past no longer support it.

“On the other hand, the look at the symbol of marriage has become more volatile, which makes endings easier. The excessive search for unrealistic happiness makes people avoid going through the difficulties inherent in the adaptation process of a couple.”
