Bolsonaro says PL will join “heavyweight” governor soon

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) stated this Wednesday (27) that the PL will form a “heavyweight governor” soon. He spoke during the ceremony of Senator Izalci Lucas joining the party. Izalci left the PSDB. Bolsonaro did not mention names, but the party has been trying to negotiate the possible affiliation of the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).

However, Tarcísio has already told close allies that he intends to remain in the Republicans. “Other people from the Legislature will come to us. Other heavyweights from the Executive Branch will also come… A heavyweight governor will soon arrive for our party,” said Bolsonaro.

The president of the PL, Valdemar da Costa Neto, spoke at the beginning of the ceremony and left the place to avoid meeting Bolsonaro. The two are prevented from maintaining contact by decision of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes.

Both are targets of the investigation investigating an alleged coup attempt to keep the former president in power after the 2022 elections. The PL president stated that the situation will be resolved “soon”.

“We have been fighting for years to bring Izalci to our party. Thanks to Bolsonaro, PL is the largest party in Brazil. Thank God, Izalci accepted Bolsonaro’s appeal [para entrar na legenda]… We’re going to rock the 2026 elections, we’re going to have Bolsonaro, Michelle and Bia [Kicis] next to Izalci. I have to leave, due to the impediment of being with Bolsonaro, but that’s not a problem, we’ll resolve it soon”, stated Costa Neto.

The president of the PL in the Federal District, deputy Bia Kicis, said that Izalci’s performance in the Senate will be very important. “We need the PL senators to make the Senate recover the dignity that the Brazilian people expect”, she pointed out. Senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), leader of the opposition in the Senate, highlighted Izalci’s “courage” in joining the PL.

Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, president of PL Mulher, prayed the Our Father during the event at the request of her new party colleague. “I’m not joining the PL, I’m returning… I’m returning at the most difficult time. It would be very comfortable for me to stay in the situation I was in, but the only party that has the competence to face this moment is the PL”, highlighted Izalci. With his arrival, the PL will have 13 senators.
