BOA VISTA (RR) – Fires in the farming regions continue to affect the indigenous communities of Roraima, causing damage to the fields, the death of animals and the destruction of houses, in a sad scenario that affects the State of Roraima. Losses of farms, banana plantations, cassava and other subsistence products have already been recorded.

The tuxaua of the Guariba community, Ezequiel Laurentino da Silva, Raposa region, in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, lamented the environmental crime that hit the region. The fire destroyed the vegetation near the Uirapuru Community, the buritizal grove known as Diamante Negro, a source of food and raw materials for building houses, handicrafts and traditional medicine, was decimated by the fire.

In the Pium indigenous community, TI Manoá-Pium, Serra da Lua region, in addition to the intense fire, another concern shared by Tuxaua Lázaro Wapichana is the heavy smoke that has been affecting the health of residents.

According to Jabson Nagelo, Coordinator of the Indigenous Community Brigade in the Malacacheta Indigenous Land, a firefighting base was set up with 10 men, in addition to the brigade members from the PrevFogo Program. The work has already lasted more than 20 days. The brigade built a 4-kilometer support line to prevent the fire from advancing.

The technique used guarantees the effectiveness of the process, which should be completed next Friday. “The fire today affects the communities of Malacacheta, Canauanim and Taba Lascada, where in the latter there is no fire brigade and the work to contain the fire is carried out by the community itself”said the coordinator.

The coordinator also spoke of the commitment of the residents of the affected communities and the support of PrevFogo.

“We can identify the origin of the fire and the vast majority comes from outside indigenous lands”, highlighted Abson. He highlighted the existence of three large outbreaks in the region of Serra da Lua, Alto Alegre and Amajari identified by the Monitoring Room, where the outbreaks appear about one km outside the Ti and then reach communities driven by the wind. The fire has devastated large areas of virgin forests, plantations that are destroyed by fire, which also scares away animals that are a source of food, as well as damaging plantations.

Data from the Queimadas Program of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) indicate that in Roraima 7 of the 10 indigenous lands that had the most hot spots, including T. I Yanomami (230), Raposa Serra do Sol (91) and Terra Indígena São Mark (21).

The Indigenous Community Fire Fighting Brigade of the Department of Territorial and Environmental Management, of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), has played an important role in preventing and fighting fires. Currently, there are 54 brigade members, distributed across 5 bases, located in the regions of Surumu (Barro Community), Tabaio (Anta Community), Waiwai (Anauá Community), Serra da Lua (TI Manoá Pium) and (Jacamim Community).
