From now on, Santa Catarina will have yet another strategy to help reduce the severity of dengue patients who reach the health network. The launch of the Dengue Protocol application, developed by the Rio de Janeiro State Department of Health and shared with the states of the South and Southeast Integration Consortium (Cosud), took place this Wednesday, 27th, at the state Civil Defense headquarters. The objective of the platform for clinical case management is to provide agility and support to healthcare professionals.

The application allows the identification of the stage of the disease and treatment of each patient through characteristics, signs and symptoms. The risk classification groups are A, B, C and D, they differ in terms of symptoms, warning signs and social and demographic characteristics of the individuals.

“We have been carrying out actions to combat and control dengue since 2023 and this new technology is another one of them. The panel will assist in the application of appropriate and timely treatment to prevent the worsening of the patients’ clinical condition and possibly death”, explains the Secretary of State for Health, Carmen Zanotto.

Development

The application was developed based on the Dengue RJ Panel, created by the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat, the tool is the result of collaboration between the states that are part of the South and Southeast Integration Consortium (Cosud). During the panel presentation held on March 4, the Secretary of State for Health, Carmen Zanotto, requested the use of technology and speed for implementation in Santa Catarina.

“The app has a simple interface, but it helps professionals who receive a patient with suspected dengue fever on how to proceed. Just fill in the data and the app details the necessary clinical management, whether with hospital admission or just monitoring the treatment”, explains the superintendent of Health Surveillance of SC, the infectious disease doctor, Fábio Gaudenzi.

Dengue

The main symptoms of dengue are fever, nausea, vomiting, red spots on the skin, pain in the body and joints, headache and pain behind the eyes. When presenting signs and symptoms, a health unit should be sought for assistance. “Intense hydration is one of the main treatment measures, therefore, people who present symptoms should drink a lot of water from the moment symptoms appear and even while waiting for care”, explains the doctor.

According to the Monitoring Panel, the state has 85,485 probable cases of dengue, with 40 confirmed deaths. “The best way to avoid dengue, zika and chikungunya, diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, continues to be to eliminate places with stagnant water”, concludes Secretary Carmen.

Actions in SC

SC intensified actions to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The state government made a total transfer of 20 million reais to assist municipalities in their activities. In addition, it invested in advertising and awareness campaigns, with materials published on radio, television, billboards and other media.

There were also several training sessions for health professionals to care for patients and meetings with managers and municipal teams to discuss the epidemiological scenario and intensify actions. Several bodies and departments joined Health, with a cleaning effort in yards and facilities of public bodies.
