After achieving the largest cargo movement among Santa Catarina ports in 2023, with growth of 33%, the Port of São Francisco, in the municipality of São Francisco do Sul, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, stands out for other advances. It maintained leadership in the movement of steel cargo between the country’s public terminals and reached third place in this ranking when private ports are also considered.

The data are from the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq). In 2023, the Port of São Francisco handled 3.6 million tons of steel products. With this result, it remained the leader in these cargoes among public ports, accounting for 60% of the total.
Furthermore, it reached third position among ports in general last year. It was behind the Tubarão Maritime Terminal, in Espírito Santo, which handled 6.7 million tons of steel items, and the port of the German multinational Thyssenkrupp, in Rio de Janeiro, which handled 3.8 million tons.
– In 2023, the Port of São Francisco had an 11% increase in the landing of these steel products compared to the previous year, when 3.3 million tons were handled – highlighted Cleverton Vieira, president of the port.

According to him, of the total moved in 2023, almost 2 million tons were steel coils that came from ArcelorMittal, in Espírito Santo, to the company’s Vega unit, in San Francisco. They are received by the private Tesc terminal.
The other part, 1.6 million tons, are products imported from China by companies from Santa Catarina and other states in the South.
