-

At the beginning of the week, the Rio Branco, Roraima’s main river, reached minus 39 centimeters. This is the second biggest drought in history, since the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA), operated by the Geological Survey of Brazil, in 1952. The last time the river reached such low marks was in 2016, when it registered the mark of minus 57 centimeters.

The situation of the river has been critical since October last year, when Roraima, in the north of the country, began to face extreme drought. So far, in the month of March, it has not rained in the capital Boa Vista. For the period, 39.2 millimeters of rain was expected, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

As a result, boats are stranded on sandbanks, and people are crossing the river on foot, interfering with the daily lives of the local population.

In February of this year, the Rio Branco had reached two centimeterswhich until then was the lowest rate recorded in 2024, according to data from the Operational Monitoring Sector of the Roraima Water and Sewage Company (Caer).

This year, the state registered 2,295 active hot spots, according to data from the Queimadas Program from Inpe – the National Institute for Space Research. As a result, Roraima is in first place in the ranking of hot spots in all of Brazil, in 2024.
