Bill 832/24 obliges public authorities to adopt measures to identify and support the registration of products and services capable of receiving an indication of origin (IP) or a designation of origin (DO), especially food, beverages and artisanal items .

The proposal, under analysis in the Chamber of Deputies, seeks to develop the local economy and protect the national cultural heritage. The text amends the Industrial Property Law, which deals, among other points, with IP and DO.

These two acronyms function as a distinctive geographic seal for a traditional regional product, which is protected by law, as long as it complies with certain rules, such as coffee from the Cerrado of Minas Gerais or shoes from Franca (SP).

Difference
Representative Alberto Fraga (PL-DF), author of the project, states that the measure seeks to increase the number of products and services with IP or DO in Brazil. According to the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), Brazil has 94 geographical indications (71 IPs and 23 DOs). Worldwide, there are 10,000 geographical indications, 90% of which are in developed countries.

“The developed world attaches great importance to denomination of origin as a form of economic and cultural protection for its communities, and Brazil needs to follow this movement,” said Fraga.

Next steps
PL 832/24 will be analyzed in conclusive character in the Agriculture, Livestock, Supply and Rural Development committees; Industry, Commerce and Services; and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship.
