The pharmaceutical AstraZeneca began to withdraw the vaccine against the virus from circulation around the world. Covid-19. The information was released this Tuesday (7) by the British newspaper The Telegraph.

According to the newspaper, the warning arrived a few months after the pharmaceutical company admitted in court documents that the vaccine could trigger the so-called thrombosis syndrome with thrombocytopenia (TTS), an effect considered “dangerous and rare”.

To the newspaper, the company sent a note stating that the decision was only commercial, since the vaccine was outdated, given the new strains that have emerged over the years.

The fact is that the vaccine can no longer be used in the European Union and the request to withdraw it from sale took place on March 5th, coming into force this Tuesday.

What is the syndrome?

TTS is a condition classified as very rare. Characterized by thrombosisthat is, the formation of blood clots and associated with thrombocytopeniawhich is low blood platelet count, can trigger potentially fatal blood clots.

Collective action

The pharmaceutical company is the target of a collective action in which 51 families are asking for compensation that could reach up to 100 million pounds, or around 650 million reais. Families reported to the Court cases involving deaths or serious injuries. The company argues that STT has other, more likely causes.

AstraZeneca stated in a note sent to the UOL website that this side effect has been known since 2021. See note:

“Our sympathies go out to anyone who has lost loved ones or reported health problems. Patient safety is our highest priority and regulatory authorities have clear and rigorous standards to ensure the safe use of all medicines, including vaccines.”

Recommendation in Brazil

In Brazil, the vaccine recommendation was updated just over two years ago (December 2022) when the Ministry of Health updated the vaccine’s indication for the public over 40 years of age, since the adverse effect was identified in the previous age group.
