Brazil has a series of regular bodies and in recent months one in particular ended up making the news. We are talking about the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS), which on December 21, 2023, published a list of health plans that will have sales temporarily suspended due to complaints related to healthcare coverage.

At the time, even Unimed, which is one of the largest health plan companies in Brazil, was also affected by the ANS decree. According to the Federal Government’s Gov.com portal, the measure is part of the Service Guarantee Monitoring, which regularly monitors the sector’s performance and works to protect consumers.
At the time, the ANS determined the suspension of 18 plans from three operators due to complaints made in the third quarter of 2023. In total, 183,690 beneficiaries are protected by the measure, as these plans can only be sold again to new customers if the operators show improved monitoring results.
“The main objective of suspending plans is consumer protection. With it, ANS prevents more people from entering a plan that is not serving its users satisfactorily”, said Alexandre Fioranelli, one of the directors of ANS. He explained that the expectation is to reduce the number of complaints in order to return to normal sales.
