‘There was a lack of PSDB positioning on the vaccine and 8/1 invasions’, admits Perillo

The national president of the PSDB, Marconi Perillo, admitted that the party lacked eloquence in not taking a position on thorny issues that undermined democracy and public policies to guarantee the population’s health.

Governor of Goiás for four terms and senator of the Republic for two years, Perillo assumed in December 2023 the role of trying to rebuild the party that already commanded Brazil for two terms under Fernando Henrique Cardoso, had one of the largest benches in the National Congress and was running for with the PT, national political protagonism.

Asked if the PSDB failed to take one side of the polarized debate, whether in relation to the anti-vaccination movement, the invasions and depredations of the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8, 2023 or the alleged attempt at a coup d’état after the elections in 2022, the toucan president was categorical.

“It was definitely missing. If we are not on either side today it is because we failed to take a position. What I hope is that this doesn’t happen again from now on. We are precisely doing the opposite with the Opposition Lighthouse and positioning ourselves in relation to all relevant issues seeking our historical place in Brazilian politics”, he said, in an exclusive interview with WEATHER Brasilia.

Guns, drugs and abortion: what the PSDB thinks

Marconi Perillo defends the creation of a congress where the party can position itself and declare its official opinion, including on usual issues, such as drugs, abortion and policies focused on weapons issues.

“The PSDB has to enter this debate with its own theses, its own strong ideas, supporting one thesis or another on one side or the other, as long as they are positive for society. We are not going to embark like ‘Maria goes with the others’ just because we have to take a position”, he said.

“The party needs to hold a congress to define certain things: are we in favor of drugs or not? Are we in favor of abortion or not? Are we pro-guns or not? I suggest that we hold a congress and the majority deliberates”, argues Perillo.
