Maintaining good health is a constant challenge for dog and cat owners. Bacteria that are in frequent contact with these animals can take advantage of their immunological fragility and cause considerable damage. “It is important to always be attentive and, in case of any change, immediately seek veterinary clinical assistance, maintaining the well-being and comfort of pets”, explains veterinarian Jaime Dias, technical and marketing manager for companion animals at Vetoquinol Saúde Animal.

Among health changes, respiratory diseases can be frequently observed in dogs and cats and manifest themselves mildly or evolve into more serious conditions, such as pneumonia. The lung microbiota plays an important role in maintaining respiratory health, however, its imbalance can be caused by different factors, such as reduced immunity, which contributes to the onset of diseases.

Respiratory illnesses are responsible for some symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, decreased appetite and prostration. Some bacteria may be more frequently responsible for these lesions. This is the case of Pasteurella multocida, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus sp and Streptoccus sp. “Clinical evaluation and examinations conducted by a veterinarian are very important for the correct diagnosis. Among the treatment strategies is the use of antibiotics, which should only be used with a prescription”, advises the veterinarian.

The improper and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, in fact, is one of the main health concerns of the World Health Organization (WHO). The agency warns that, by 2050, the adaptation of bacteria and their resistance to the main antibiotics will be the causes of death for around ten million people per year. “Awareness campaigns about the correct use of medicines, complete and uninterrupted treatment and with due medical guidance, are capable of changing this situation for the better”, warns Jaime Dias.
