Victor J. Sharrah, a 59-year-old American who worked as a truck driver and lives in Clarkesville, Tennessee, discovered three years ago that he had developed PMO (Prosopo Metamorphopsia). The condition, also known as “demon face syndrome”, causes people to see people with distorted faces, resembling demons. The information comes from The Times and the Daily Mail.

Only 75 cases of PMO were recorded. It is believed that many cases are underreported due to confusion between the diagnosis of the condition and that of schizophrenia. Changes in the nervous system can develop after a head injury, epilepsy, migraine or when the brain spends some time without receiving oxygen and nutrients.

Victor Sharrah’s case allegedly began about three years ago, when the man woke up seeing his roommate with a “demonic” face going to the bathroom. “I thought, ‘What did I just see?’ It was like something from a movie”, explained the American.

Sharrah’s colleague had a stretched mouth, pointed ears, slanted eyes and flared nostrils, which brought a “horror movie” look to the American. However, when going out to walk his dog, the former truck driver noticed that everyone had the same disfigured appearance.

Initially, the American thought he was going crazy and thought about checking himself into a psychiatric clinic. Sharrah’s opinion only changed when he reached out to an online forum and asked what was going on. The former truck driver’s question was answered by a specialist who suggested a diagnosis of PMO.

The condition usually only lasts a few days or weeks, however, Sharrah’s has lasted three years. “I’ve gotten used to this condition but I still hope it corrects itself and ‘goes away’”, said the American. Despite this, the former truck driver does not see images and photos with distorted faces.

Sharrah isn’t sure what may have caused the condition, but in 2007, he suffered a blow to the head while getting out of his truck. Just four months before seeing her roommate with a “devilish” face, Sharrah suffered from carbon monoxide inhalation.
