Madonna performed a historic show in Rio de Janeiro on the 4th and accumulated a series of controversies in Brazilian lands due to her bold and transgressive performances. Another country where she left a trail of controversy was in Italy, due to her troubled relationship with the Catholic Church.

The height of the artist’s fight with the institution happened in 1990, when Madonna toured the world with the historic “Blond Ambition Tour”. On stage, the pop star simulated masturbation and exorcism and sang at a church altar, once again causing outrage among the Catholic community.

In July of that year, the singer arrived in Rome for a performance and the confirmation of the artist’s arrival generated a lot of buzz. A series of protests began with private Catholic groups and associations.

Shortly thereafter, Pope John Paul II called for a Catholic boycott of the show, which he called “the devil’s circus” and “one of the most satanic shows in the history of humanity.”
