The New York police, in the United States, arrested protesters who were holding a pro-Palestine demonstration near the location of the Met Gala event on Monday (6). The event, which was attended by celebrities, was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the protesters were trying to reach.
According to Reuters, the police managed to prevent the protest from reaching the museum, despite the protesters’ efforts. Barricades were set up to try to separate the protesters from the place where the Met Gala red carpet was taking place.
The protesters carried banners saying “end the occupation of Palestine”, among other slogans. One of the posters said “there is no Met Gala until the bombs fall on Gaza”.
The number of people arrested in the protest was not disclosed until the last update of this report.
During the protest, monuments were spray-painted with calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Demonstrations at universities
Students occupy Columbia University buildings
In recent weeks, students from several campuses in the United States have held pro-Palestinian demonstrations and had direct confrontations with university administrators and the police.
In Columbia, New York City, hundreds of students set up a camp on the university grounds. The conflict resulted in the dismissal of two deans. After ignoring an ultimatum from management to dismantle camp, protesters broke windows and invaded a Columbia University building. After the ultimatum, the management began suspending students who decided to remain there.
