The artist explained the concept of the album: teaching how to make funk. “The album has the idea of teaching people how to do funk in English and Spanish. Whenever an international artist tries to do funk, I don’t feel like it looks like Brazil, the album’s proposal is to give this direction: to stay with the face of Brazil it’s more or less like that”, said Anitta at a press conference in which Splash I was present.
It’s very different, because we have to find words that have an impact when they hear them, in the same way in Portuguese. In some cases we had no way out, and had to put them in Portuguese, anyway.
The “Funk Generation” only exists because Anitta thought she was going to die. The singer did not mention dates, but recalled that she became “very sick” and could barely get out of bed. In December 2022, she revealed that she needed treatment for Epstein-Bar.
The artist started the album remotely, with the help of producers. “I was in bed, I couldn’t do anything. [Pensei:] ‘since I’m going to die, I’m going to make an album that I like’… This album doesn’t follow the formula of what is successful today, of what is mainstream, it really follows my head”, he explained. “After it was ready , I was fine, I went on a lot of things, spiritual journeys. I got all that voodoo out of me.”
The singer and her team were inspired by samples and different styles of funk: melody, baile de corridor, prohibitão, explicit, etc. “To have all types of dance, step, roll, everything […] I think Brazil likes it so much because it’s in our style.”
Anitta said that her team tried to change a part of “Lose Your Breath”, which is “fucking awesome”, on repeat. “We tried to change it and nothing was as cool, as fun and exciting as these lyrics. We left it like that because the important thing is to dance.”
