In an interview with Variety, Richard Gadd explained the choice of Jessica Gunning to play Martha in Baby Reindeer and the differences between the character and the real person.

“We have to make them different for legal reasons. But what I needed to see was the essence of the person, the kind of energy, and no one did that like Jess. She’s phenomenal.”it says. “I needed to see someone who was vulnerable one moment, angry the next, volatile but so desperate and supportive. I needed to see someone who could capture a full range of emotions. When someone has severe mental health issues, they tend to jump from one emotion to another, sometimes even very quickly. And that’s very difficult to do from an acting standpoint, but Jess seems to have it in her pores, she just seems to fall out of it.”.
