IBGE releases this Wednesday (27), growth in same-sex marriage across the country, with various data from 2010 to 2022. Including comparison to straight marriages and also with information on growing divorces after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of same-sex marriages in Brazil is increasing considerably. The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) points to growth of 20%.
Homosexual marriages at a registry office
This growth was in civil registration at the registry office, and stable unions were not included, being the largest volume of same-sex unions since the resolution of the National Council of Justice in 2013, which guaranteed the right of the LGBTQIA+ population to civil marriage.
Although the number of straight marriages has decreased since 2020, after the pandemic, the number of same-sex marriages continues to increase.

Rate of straight breakups increases
And, on the other hand, divorces have increased considerably, by 7.9%, 420 thousand cases in the same period, in 2021.
Another change was in the duration of marriages, which decreased by 13.8 years, in 2022. In 2010, the average was 15.9 years.
Regarding the age of people who divorced, there was also a change, in 2022 men divorced at the age of 44 on average and women at the age of 41 on average, and in 2010 men divorced at the age of 42 on average and women at 39. 4 years.
Across the country there was an increase in same-sex marriages, 4%, from 932,502 to 970,041, breaking a record.
The southeast and central-west regions, 6.5 and 6.7 marriages per thousand inhabitants, were those with the highest marriage rates, while the northeast and south regions had the lowest records, 5.1 and 5.3 respectively.
In 2022, 5.9 people, on average, got married in Brazil.
