Baby Reindeer’ became one of the most talked about series of the last week as it portrayed a real story lived by the Scottish actor and comedian Richard Gadd when he was the victim of a stalker and sexual predator in his early 20s.

In the plot, he plays Donny Dunn, who ends up becoming Martha’s obsession (Jessica Gunning), a woman he meets in a bar where he works, awakening in her a suffocating interest that could destroy both of their lives.

And the repercussion was so great that several fans began an investigation to try to discover the identity of the real woman who inspired the plot and the other characters involved.

In the real case, Gadd He reported during some shows that he was pursued for at least four years by the woman who nicknamed him Baby Rena.

Despite the nickname that often causes laughter in the audience, he said he was harassed with 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemails, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters.

Additionally, she tried to get his attention with gifts including a stuffed reindeer, sleeping pills, a woolly hat, and underwear such as pajamas and boxer briefs.

However, fans’ obsession with finding the real people behind the case is “crossing the line”, as the man himself reported. Gadd on your Instagram profile.

Through Stories, he asked the public not to start a “witch hunt”, warning about baseless speculation, as one of his co-workers was falsely accused of being one of the stalkers of Gadd.

“Hello everyone, people I love, worked with and admire (including Sean Foley) are being unfairly accused of speculation. Please don’t speculate about who any real-life person could be. [retrada na série]. That is not the goal of our program. With love, Richard x X.”

Don’t forget to watch:

In an interview with Varietyhe had already explained why he had not revealed the real identities of the characters:

“There are certain restrictions [quando se faz uma produção baseada em fatos]. You can’t just copy people’s lives and names and broadcast them on TV. Of course, we were also aware that some characters are based on vulnerable people. We don’t want to make people’s lives more difficult. So you need to hide certain things to protect yourself and other people.”

The comedian also admitted that he had to make some changes to make the story more attractive and dramatic.

“A lot of the persecution I experienced was a boring narrative. Sometimes, for artistic reasons, it is necessary to dramatize the content to make it more attractive to the audience. What happened to me were repetitive actions, like: ‘Oh, God, a message from this person again. And, of course, on television, especially in a thriller, you
you need to move certain timelines, you need to move certain points for the end of the episodes to have a satisfactory result. In addition to a true story, you need to make it visually interesting. Still, it’s a true story – it comes from an emotional truth, and I think that’s what people relate to most.”

However, Gadd reinforces that the objective of the series is to repudiate abusive behavior and harassment and not to glamorize people who do this.

At the end of the adaptation, Martha is arrested after confessing to stalking and harassment, being sentenced to nine months in prison, in addition to receiving a restraining order.

In the real case, the fate of the pursuer is uncertain, as Gadd told the The Independentwho did not insist on her arrest, demonstrating empathy and viewing the case as a matter of mental illness.

“I can’t emphasize enough how much of a victim she is in all of this. Stalking and harassment are a form of mental illness. It would have been wrong to cast her as a monster because she is not well and the system failed her.”

With direction from Weronika Tofilska, the attraction portrays the case in seven episodes.
