Emma Stone has finally spoken out about the supposed moment of tension between her and Jimmy Kimmel at the 2024 Oscars. During the ceremony, held in March, social media users pointed out, based on lip reading, that the actress had called the presenter an “idiot ” after a joke involving the film ‘Poor Creatures’.
After excerpts from the feature film were shown during the announcement of the contenders for the Best Picture statuette, Kimmel declared: “These were all the parts of ‘Poor Creatures’ that we can show on TV.” The line is a reference to the sex and nudity scenes starred by Stone in the film.
The cameras then caught the actress rolling her eyes and saying something to her husband, screenwriter Dave McCary.
Now, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter magazine, the actress denied that she had said any offense to Kimmel and emphasized that she was not upset by the joke.
“No! I didn’t call him an idiot… What did I say? I didn’t call him an idiot,” Emma declared. “I wasn’t upset at all. I’ll need to look into this. It’s practically impossible to be offended.”
Although this was not Stone’s intention, some internet users agreed with the speech attributed to her.
“I don’t like Jimmy Kimmel and I love Emma Stone. But now she’s my favorite person ever. No one ever called him an idiot, which is what he really is,” one Twitter/X user wrote, while another added: “Emma Stone’s reaction to Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Poor Creatures’ joke is priceless. She knows how low it went.”
Offended or not, at least Emma Stone didn’t leave the Oscars empty-handed. She won the award for Best Actress, precisely for her work in ‘Poor Creatures’. Check out the trailer for the film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos below.
