Influencer Isabel Veloso, 17, got married at the beginning of the week and, this Wednesday (24), traveled to her honeymoon with her husband, Lucas Borbas. The young woman is undergoing palliative treatment for end-stage Hodkin Lymphoma.

Isabel did not publish the place where she is, but rather several photos of a chalet where she is enjoying her honeymoon with her husband. They got engaged on March 22nd and made the religious cerimony on Monday, April 22nd. The civil wedding took place on the 13th.

Isabel Veloso’s diagnosis

A Influencer Isabel Veloso, 17, reported on social media that she is facing terminal cancer and has an estimated four months to live. According to the woman from Paraná, she has Hodgkin’s lymphoma and lives with a 17 centimeter tumor, which takes part of his lung and heart.

When she was 15 years old, Isabel was diagnosed with the disease and underwent a bone marrow transplant, in addition to chemotherapy. She even reported that she had been cured in November 2023. However, three months later, the disease returned.

Before getting married on April 13th, the teenager showed a medical report to prove her health status to her 1.6 million followers this morning. The young woman was accused of pretending to be sick to raise funds for the ceremony.

The document highlights that the teenager has “Hodgkin’s lymphoma unresponsive to chemotherapy treatment” and that she undergoes “exclusive palliative care”. The use of “terminal” to define Isabel’s case is based on the fact that the young man no longer responds to oncological treatments.

Last week, Isabel told be receiving palliative care with cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical substance from the Cannabis sativa plant. The information came at a time when she said she was able to “walk better”, climb stairs, without feeling so much pain.

Terminal pacient

Hematologist at the Oncoclínicas Group, in Belo Horizonte, Dr. Caio César Ribeiro explains that “Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system and usually affects mainly young people, although it has a second peak of incidence in people over the age of 60 years”.

The hematologist prefers not to use the term “terminal” to refer to the stage of the disease. “I wouldn’t say the term ‘terminal’ is appropriate for every cancer situation. It is possible that this term is used in those patients in whom curative therapy can no longer be offered. This does not mean that the patient cannot be offered strategies to improve their quality of life,” he says.

For patients who do not respond to treatment, he highlights some precautions that must be taken. “It is very important that the hematologist who takes care of the patient with this type of cancer explains about the disease and expectations regarding symptom control and quality of life”, he begins.

“In addition, it is also very important to be monitored by a Palliative Care doctor who will help the hematologist and the patient in providing care for a better life. We recently had the creation of the Palliative Care Committee at ABHH (Brazilian Association of Hematology and Hemotherapy) which has brought more advancement and care to patients”, he points out.

“It is very difficult to accurately map out a life span for any patient who presents with a disease that is refractory to available treatments. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma can present periods of greater growth and stability and the period may be longer or shorter than that”, she explains.
