Lawyer Vital do Rêgo Neto, son of minister Vital do Rêgo Filho, from Federal Audit Court (TCU)was elected to the Board of Directors of the Electricity Trading Chamber (CCEE), on Tuesday 23rd.

The position will earn you a monthly salary of R$86,500, totaling R$1.2 million per year. The remuneration, which will be paid to the new advisor for four years, still excludes benefits such as meal vouchers, health insurance and life insurance.

The nomination of Vital do Rêgo Neto to the CCEE General Assembly was made by Companhia Energética Minas Gerais (Cemig), with the endorsement of the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira. Vital Neto is also the nephew of the vice-president of the Senate, Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB).

According to the newspaper The State of S. Paulo, the last-minute appointment surprised companies in the sector. Vital Neto said that, “due to political coexistence”, his family has a “friendly relationship” with minister Alexandre Silveira, whom he thanked for the “trust placed in his work”.

His father, Vital do Rêgo Filho, former federal deputy and TCU minister, stated that his son is a “militant lawyer in the electricity sector” with solid academic training and a recognized professional trajectory. Vital Filho was already a defendant in Lava Jato, in 2020, on suspicion of receiving R$3 million in bribes from the construction company OAS.

Vital Neto won with 97.2% of the votes at the CCEE General Assembly, made up of the entity’s member companies.

He has a degree in Law from UNB, a master’s degree in Energy Law from Sorbonne University and was an advisor to the board of directors of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).

According to the newspaper The globe, sector executives considered the election a “surprise” and a “turnaround”. A few weeks ago, the leadership of the Brazilian Association of Electricity Distributors (Abradee) decided in favor of Marco Delgado’s name.

The re-election of the advisor, a former member of Abradee’s own board of directors, was considered a natural path and one of consensus among the companies. However, on the eve of the CCEE election, Vital Neto’s name was nominated by Cemig, a state-owned energy company in Minas Gerais.

According to distributor executives, the nomination was decisive, since, despite having already deliberated at Abradee on Delgado’s nomination, they changed their vote.

In the end, Delgado was advised to withdraw his candidacy and the distribution companies’ votes went to the name supported by the government.

The executives reported, with reservation, that the government’s move to register a name in the CCEE comes at a time when companies are on the verge of negotiating the renewal of their concessions.
