A unemployment rate in Brazil was 7.8% in the quarter ended in Februaryaccording to the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), released this Thursday (28) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In relation to the immediately previous quarter, between September and November, the period saw a rise in unemployment (7.5%). In the same quarter of 2023, the rate was 8.6%.

With the results, the absolute number of unemployed people grew 4.1% against the previous quarter, reaching 8.5 million people. In the annual comparison, the decline is 7.5%.

Between December and February, there was stability in the employed population, in 100.2 million people. In the year, the increase was 2.2%, with 2.1 million more people employed.

The percentage of employed people in the population of working age — called occupation level — was estimated at 57.1%, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the same period last year, the increase is 0.7 pp

The number of people in the workforce (sum of employed and unemployed) remained stable in the quarter, estimated at 108.8 million. The population outside the force totaled 66.8 million, growth of 0.4%.
