Problems at airports seem to be common these days, but maybe that’s because you’re choosing the wrong destinations for your trips. AirHelp, an organization that defends passenger rights and monitors complaints about cancellations, delays and lost baggage, annually analyzes more than 4,000 airports in its global database to identify the best and worst in terms of performance.

Criteria considered include punctuality and customer feedback on the airport experience, including food and shopping options.

Four Brazilian cities are among the 10 best airports in the world: Recife, Brasília, Belém and Belo Horizonte.

Japan contributes three airports. In the United States, no airport is in the top 10, and only three are in the top 50: Minneapolis, Seattle and Detroit.

The survey carried out in 2003 was based on data collected from January 1st to September 30th, with the participation of more than 15,800 passengers.

The title of best airport in the world was awarded to Muscat International Airport in Oman. Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport, in Brazil, and Cape Town International Airport, in South Africa, occupy second and third place, respectively.

European airports didn’t perform much better than their American counterparts, with only nine of them included in the top 50, according to AirHelp. Bilbao Airport, in northern Spain, leads the European ranking. This trend reveals that major global metropolitan centers are often not home to exceptional airports, as might be expected.

Despite high air traffic, Atlanta Airport ranked 55th, while Heathrow Airport in London ranked 163rd, and Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris even lower. New York’s JFK and La Guardia airports, recently undergoing an $8 billion renovation, ranked 106th and 70th, respectively.
