One Zoo in Jiangsu province, east of Chinarecently put on display two Chow Chow dogs painted black and white to look like giant pandas in order to attract more visitors.

The decision caused astonishment and doubts about the legality of such a scheme.
According to visitor videos on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, since Friday (3), visitors to the zoo, located in Taizhou, noticed misleading language on tickets. The tickets said, “Xiong Mao Quan”, which could be translated as “panda dogs”.
This deceptive tactic may have led visitors to misinterpreting what was being offered.
“Inevitably visitors will feel disappointed and deceived when they discovered the truth,” some lawyers said in media reports.
Xiong Mao Quan was released on the May holidays with tickets costing 20 yuan ($2.8).
A zoo employee told the Global Times website on Monday (6) that the facility does not consider the system to be a case of fraud.
“It’s just a new exhibit that we offer to visitors. We are not charging extra. The word highlighting Chow Chow dogs is correct and describes exactly what they are, so we are not misleading our visitors,” said a ticket seller.
At the same time, she admitted that the volume of visits increased in the last days.
According to media reports, the zoo confirmed that they painted Chow Chow dogs using a pattern that is similar to giant pandas. to “fill a gap” since they don’t have giant pandas in the installation.
However, such marketing action caused heated discussion among Chinese citizens.
Some have expressed concern, questioning whether painting Chow Chow dogs could be considered a type of animal abuse.
In response, a pet beauty professional said that for healthy pets it is acceptable to dye their fur, as long as organic ingredients herbal treatments are applied.
