A cat named Galena had an unusual adventure and survived for a week without food and water after being accidentally sent by mail from Utah to California, in the United States.
Galena, who loved hiding in boxes, ended up getting into one that would be sent back to Amazon by her owners, Carrie Stevens and Matt Clark, on April 10.
Desperate with the cat’s disappearance, the couple searched everywhere for her, without success.
“It was terrible. We had no idea what had happened. We put up tons of posters. We reached out to friends and family to help us find her. We looked for a week,” recalls Carrie in an email sent to Utah television channel KSL TV.
The story, which could have ended in tragedy, had a happy ending thanks to the feline’s resilience and the microchip that identified her.
According to the BBC, seven days later, when hope was already fading, Carrie received an unexpected call: Galena’s microchip had been scanned in California. “I just couldn’t believe she was in California, I thought it was a prank,” Carrie confessed.
Apparently, the box Galena was in was left open during transport, allowing her to breathe. Despite dehydration and hunger, the cat was found alive and in good condition.
As soon as they found out about the cat’s whereabouts, the couple bought two plane tickets to pick her up the next day. They took the carrier, treats and blankets with the scent of the house but, according to the owner, Galena only stopped shaking when she went into Carrie’s lap.
