Lidia Stepanivna Lomikovska, 98, walked for six kilometers, with the help of a cane and wearing slippers, to find her family outside the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, the report said. Associated Press on Tuesday (30).

Lomikovska and her family decided to leave the town of Ocheretyne in eastern Donetsk after Russian troops invaded last week and fighting intensified. The Russians have advanced in the region using artillery, drones and bombs.

In her attempt to escape, the 98-year-old woman lost her son and two daughters-in-law, but decided to continue to her destination. After a full day of walking, without food or water, Lomikovska was rescued at night by Ukrainian soldiers.

She was handed over to the White Angels, a police group that evacuates citizens living on the front lines. They took her to an evacuee shelter and met her relatives.

Lomikovska said she fell twice and had to stop to rest several times. “Once I lost my balance and fell into the bush. I fell asleep. And then, for the second time, again, I fell. But then I got up and thought to myself, I need to keep walking, little by little,” Lomikovska said, according to AP.

This is the second war that the Ukrainian woman has witnessed. The first was the Second World War.
