Price adjusted after purchase. However, according to the North American publication, the price of the earrings was later adjusted on the Cartier website to more than US$10,000.
Legal dispute
Thus began a months-long dispute between the consumer and the French brand. Villarreal reported that, about a week after the purchase, Cartier began a series of attempts to cancel the order. Initially, the brand stated that the earrings were no longer available. Afterwards, company representatives started calling the doctor.
They said that “the earrings I had ordered were not at the correct price, so they wanted to cancel the purchase and that, due to the inconvenience, they would give me a gift”, Villarreal said. The “gift” would be a bottle of Cartier Cuvée champagne and a leather item from the brand.
Consumer protection law. According to the Mexican newspaper El Universal, a federal consumer protection law in Mexico states that a supplier of goods “is obliged to inform and respect the prices, rates, guarantees, quantities, qualities, measurements, interest, charges, deadlines, dates, modalities, reservations and other conditions under which delivery of the good or provision of the service has been offered, obliged or agreed with the consumer, and under no circumstances will these goods or services be denied to any person.”
