More than 100 pilot whales strand on Australian beach
Rescue teams are carrying out an operation to try to save around 140 whales that stranded on a beach on the southwest coast of Australia, this Thursday (25). According to experts, more than 20 animals did not survive and died.
This is the second time in less than a year that pilot whales have stranded off the Australian coast. In July 2023, nearly 100 animals died after becoming stranded on a remote beach in Western Australia.
This time, the group ran aground on a shallow-water beach popular with tourists. Authorities reported that professionals were sent to the region, including veterinarians and marine scientists.
Despite the task force, the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said that based on previous cases, rescuing the animals was likely to be very difficult.
“These events often result in the euthanasia of stranded animals as the most humane outcome,” said the agency spokesperson.
Pilot whales are known for their social bonds and strong union between members of the same group. Therefore, when one of them ends up running aground, the rest follow.
