A China revealed a significant advance in rail transport with the development of a new magnetic levitation train (maglev), capable of reaching extraordinary speeds in low vacuum tubes.

This train, still in the testing phase, managed to reach a speed of 623 km/halmost surpassing 200km/h the record for the fastest train currently in service.

In February, during a crucial technology test, the train ran stably through a two-kilometer low-vacuum tube, the train reported. Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the state-owned company responsible for the project. Although the exact speed achieved in the latest test was not disclosed, CASIC confirmed that it was higher than the previous record.

The maglev train uses magnetic levitation technology, which employs magnetic forces to suspend, guide and move the train without contact with the ground, eliminating the need for heavy components such as wheels and brakes. This system makes it possible to significantly reduce friction, which contributes to the high speeds achieved.

The potential impact of such technology on transportation is significant.

“Imagine traveling 400 kilometers in about half an hour – that would be a game changer for population centers,” said Jonathan Couldrick of engineering College, ANU Computing and Cybernetics.

Despite the advantages, the project faces significant challenges, such as the construction of new infrastructure and the demand for a substantial amount of energy.

The associated costs are estimated to be four to five times higher than those of a conventional high-speed railway, according to UK rail expert Professor Andrew McNaughton.

This maglev train is part of a broader effort by China to push the limits of rail technology, competing directly with air transport in terms of speed and efficiency.

China also has projects to increase the maglev train network, including the line already in operation in Shanghai, which reaches 460 km/h, making maglev the fastest train in service today.
