Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group said on Tuesday it had launched a drone attack on Israeli military bases north of the city of Acre, in its deepest assault on Israeli territory since the start of the Gaza war.

The Israeli military said it was not aware that any of its facilities had been hit by Hezbollah, but said earlier on Tuesday that it had intercepted two “aerial targets” off Israel’s northern coast.

Hezbollah said it acted in retaliation for an Israeli attack that killed one of its fighters. The group published what appeared to be a satellite photo, with the location of the attack symbolized by a flash with a red circle around it, which was halfway between Acre and Nahariyya, to the north.

Israeli airstrikes killed two Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon, the military said on Tuesday. Hezbollah later confirmed the death of one of its fighters, Hussein Azkoul, but did not provide further details.

Another Israeli attack late Monday into Tuesday killed a fighter from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Forces unit, the military said, although Hezbollah did not confirm his death.

Since October, Israeli strikes have killed around 270 Hezbollah fighters and around 50 civilians. Hezbollah rocket and drone fire killed about a dozen Israeli soldiers and half as many civilians. The bombing displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides.
