Recently, the Biden government discreetly authorized the sending of billions of dollars in weapons and fighter jets to Israel, even in the face of Washington’s concerns about the possibility of a military attack in South Gaza, which could endanger the lives of several hundred thousand Palestinian civilians.
The new batches of weapons include more than 1,800 2,000-pound MK84 bombs and 500 MK82 bombs, according to Pentagon and State Department officials with knowledge of the matter. These 2,000-pound bombs have been linked to past incidents of high casualties during Israel’s military operation in Gaza. These officials, among others, gave their statements to The Washington Post anonymously, as the recent authorizations have not been officially released.
This fact emphasizes that, despite there being differences between the US and Israel regarding the conduct of the war, the Biden administration sees arms shipments as something untouchable when considering how it could influence the actions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“We continue to support Israel’s right to protect itself,” said a White House official. “Aid under conditions has not been our practice.”
