Exactly 25 years ago, on May 10, 1999, Rede Manchete de Televisão went off the air. In less than two decades of existence, the broadcaster has collected some controversies, such as a soap opera that was shortened due to low ratings and ended up in court, a famous actress who received offerings from viewers and punishment for pornography in the Carnival broadcast.

This last topic refers to the festivities of 1988, when the channel was considering revoking its concession after “exaggerating” the forbidden scenes it showed. As published by Jornal do Brasil on February 20 of that year, the final report by Dentel (National Telecommunications Department) on the broadcasts of carnival dances in Rio criticized Band and Manchete.

The extinct broadcaster would have focused on “the ‘women being focused on from below with their legs open’ and the ‘parade of hotties in transparent bikinis, with camera close-ups and nasty comments’. The apotheosis was at the Gay Gala, when a reporter and a transsexual engage in a long dialogue about the sex change operation. It ends when ‘the gay man lifts his skirt and shows his female sex, with nothing on top'”.

At the time, Adolpho Bloch (1908-1995), owner of the channel, instructed his employees to avoid exaggerations. Initially, the government decided that both networks would be off the air for 24 hours, but this did not happen. After the discussion dragged on, they only received written warnings and had to present the message for two consecutive days in prime time.

Manchete marked the career of Neusa Borges. This is because, on the now defunct network, the actress played Cigana Pomba Gira in the soap opera Carmem (1987-1988) and viewers were convinced that she was truly incorporated, which led to them sending offerings.

In an interview with Conversa com Bial, the veteran recalled her work: “I’m a Kardecist spiritist, I had just lost my husband and I was sleeping on the floor of my mother’s house with my two daughters. Suddenly, the pay phone rang at Cohab, in São Paulo: it was TV Manchete calling me for a job and I went.”

“Everyone said I was incorporated. It was the time I made the most money in my life. I got to the Manchete and there were boxes of champagne as gifts for Pomba Gira, I got jewelry, I even won the lottery. The priests said that Pomba Gira It was going to end my life, I wanted it back”, said the famous woman.

Carolina Kasting had a different experience. In 1998, the artist starred in the soap opera Brida, the last serial that Manchete produced before declaring bankruptcy. Due to low ratings, the cast was left without a salary and refused to record a hasty ending after studios were shut down and protests took place.

After 24 years, in September 2022, the actress managed to receive payment for having brought the main character of the story to life. This is because, in 1999, she directed part of the action to Amilcare Dallevo Jr., majority partner of RedeTV!, a broadcaster that was forced by the courts to settle accounts with the celebrity.
