In the small town of Flint, Oklahoma, the violent death of a child prompts detective Ralph Anderson to launch an investigation that points to a local high school sports coach as the culprit. However, things turn out to be much darker than they seem. This is the premise of Outsidera series that has enjoyed huge ratings on Max streaming.

Inspired by the book of the same name by horror master Stephen King, the 10-episode production mixes drama, horror and many supernatural elements. Produced by HBO, the adaptation dates back to 2020 and, at the time, had already proven to be an audience record holder for the network.

Outsider brings a plot full of twists and turns

The history of Outsider stars Ben Mendelsohn, who plays a very disturbing version of Detective Ralph Anderson. Following what is described by King in his work, the character is a recovering alcoholic who tries to deal with the death of his own son — something that seems to interfere with his investigations.

The series also features Jason Bateman (Terry Maitland) as the technician accused of being responsible for the recent murder. He is defended by Howie Salomon (Bill Camp) who, after clashing with Anderson, ends up collaborating with him when supernatural elements emerge during the investigation.

The cast of Outsider is complemented by Jeremy Bobb, Julianne Nicholson, Mare Winningham, Paddy Considine, Yul Vazquez, Marc Menchaca and Cynthia Erivo. The series was developed by Richard Price and has a total of 10 episodes with durations ranging from 50 to 60 minutes.

Series was canceled

Although HBO has stated that Outsider had the best debut season since Westworld it was launched, she decided not to renew production for a second season. However, the entire story of King’s book is present in the 10 episodes already available in the Max catalog.

With King’s blessing, Price wanted to expand the series’ universe by bringing a new plot starring Holly Gibney, a character played by Cynthia Erivo. The intention was to continue counting supernatural horror stories that had inexplicable characteristics.

By the time the second season of Outsider was denied, production company MRC stated that it intended to offer the idea to other broadcasters. Although the company is known for its good relationship with Netflix, so far there is no confirmation that the plot can be continued by the streaming service — or any other platform.
